THE 36th ANNUAL NEWPORT NEWS CONN-MADDEN RELAYS
Dedication of the Newport News Conn-Madden Relays to
Julius “Julie” Conn –In appreciation of his loyal services and spirit to his sport. On September 17, 1983, at the age of 78, Coach Conn passed away, leaving behind much more than merely a spectacular coaching record. Notwithstanding many outstanding athletic accomplishments and awards, his major contribution was to the total development of young people he coached; proof positive through the fact that so many went on to become leaders in our city, state, and nation. Coach Conn silently helped many; yet, never asking for anything tangible in return. He did not concern himself with the background of the youngsters he served, but only in the youngsters themselves. He had a deep personal, and often emotional, concern for everyone with whom he came in contact. As a coach, Mr. Conn always expected his athletes to do their best. He demanded 100-percent contribution towards excellence. He taught his athletes to develop self-respect and work to their fullest ability, which was all he asked of them. As a result of his guidance, his athletes looked upon themselves with great respect and increased personal value. Coach Conn’s former-athletes then- may not have always understood him, but they now say they reflect frequently upon and love him for his teachings. His motto could have been, “I don’t care if they like me, but I will have their respect and one day they will understand.” Somewhere in the bodies and characters of the young men his coaching and mentoring reached, and in the unknown hours and dollars he spent to help those same young men over crucial periods in their lives, is told the real story of Julie Conn.
JULIE CONN -The man and his record – will forever be associated with Newport News Track & Field and the Newport News Conn-Madden Relays! Thaddeus S. Madden In appreciation of his devotion to Newport News’ youth. On December 29, 1984, at the age of 68, Coach Madden passed away and with him too passed a legacy unequalled in the annals of Virginia High Schools’ coaching. His life was a total dedication to the youth of Newport News, and one which still serves as a model his former-athletes seek to replicate in all aspects of their lives. Coach Madden went placidly amid, the otherwise, noise and haste, and remembered what peace there is in silence. Through his quiet diplomacy, he changed many lives for the better. Athletic success is often associated to loudness; however, Coach Madden’s approach to coaching was a contradiction to such branding. His quiet demeanor was the source of his strength, giving dignity and honor to athletic achievements; so often, and otherwise, juxtaposed. In his quiet manner, he carried success on his shoulders lightly and was never boastful during his hours of triumph—of which there were many. Coach Madden’s contributions to the youth of Newport News reached far beyond just helping them improve their performances in track & field. While he touched the lives of many students through athletics, he also helped them become productive and significant members of the world. Through his leadership, his athletes, despite then- many of them being prejudged by some as destined to failure, soared. In the final analysis, if the ultimate goal in life is service to others, then during the race to this aim, Coach Madden crossed the finish line far ahead of many others. He “ran the good race,” as he was taught, and in his final victory we know coach heard the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
