In Virginia, the high school golf season has come to an end and in good fashion. The season began in early August and concluded with the VHSL Girls Open Championship. High school matches are typically 9 holes and are usually played on weekdays after school. The Conference and Regional Tournaments are 18-hole competitions and the State Final is a two-day and 36-hole event. There were many golfers shooting low on the golf course and who score high in the classroom. That’s the championship approach of the 2016 Virginia boys and girls golfers. A number of players in this girls open were underclassmen, but performed with confidence and high expectations. The two-day tournament of all classifications (1A-6A) represented their school in this tournament and teed off for 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday with windy conditions and temperatures in the low 60s.
Danielle Suh of Westfield H.S. claimed the girls Open Championship Golf Tournament title going into the final 18th hole with the score of 79 on day two. Danielle is the first VHSL state champion of the year per Coach Chuck Welch. Runners up were Erica Whitehouse from Atlee High School. The girls championship was so competitive there was a two-way tie for third place: Jillian Drinkard – Appomattox H.S. and Amy Yang – Hidden Valley H.S. (77, 83 -160). Rounding out the top competitors for All-State was, Carley Rudolf of First Colonial H.S. and Addie Parker of Monacan H.S.
