The Woodside boys volleyball team came into the Conference 2 volleyball tournament in an unfamiliar position. They were playing in the 4 vs 5 play in game. As the #4 seed the Wolverines faced a must win situation or their season would be ending much sooner than expected. The Wolverines got off to a sluggish start by losing in the first match. Woodside coach Dorien Hart stated, “I knew that first set wouldn’t be pretty; our best player wasn’t playing tonight due to a violation of team rules and our second best outside hitter and starting setter didn’t play in the first set after an undisclosed team violation”. The Wolverines appeared to have new life once senior outside hitter AJ Chamblee and setter Phil Woodard checked into the game to start the second set in which Woodside went on to win. Coach Dorien Hart stated, “Our young guys grew up tonight; freshman Elvin Virella and junior Bryan Fry were great at the net for us on both sides of the ball; freshman Joshua Ruff gave us some great passing’’. Woodside lost the 3rd set before going on to win the 4th and finished the evening off with a dominant 5th set victory and a place in the conference semifinal game Tuesday. Wolverines will advance to face the #1 seed and tournament host Western Western Branch Bruins. The Wolverines swept the Bruins in the 2014 season, but have since lost the last 5 matches against them. Woodside coach Dorien Hart said, “These are the playoffs, these are sports, anything can happen”. “When we step in that gym, we will be expecting to win.”
