Western Branch High School girls and boys track team captured the 2016 VHSL 6A Championship team title for consecutive seasons on Saturday, June 4, 2016. WBHS was ubiquitous in all of the events in the contest. There just aren’t enough superlatives to describe the depth of Western Branch High School girls and boys track team. WBHS has seen great success on the track and field since the arrival of Coach Claude Toukene. Coach Toukene has amazing leadership abilities and has been a big influence on several of his student-athletes. When a student-athlete comes out for the track team, Coach Toukene immediately teaches the importance of character. Character development is one of his primary goals to enhance the strength of his team. Coach Toukene is more interested in how he touches his athletes’ lives off the track. The life lessons, attitudes, and team values taught by the coaching staff at WBHS will last a lifetime for most of these athletes. Coach Toukene expressed, “we must insure that the lessons learned in the practice time of athletes develop the traits that will serve the athletes well in their futures and make them better individuals in the community”. Western Branch track & field is a sports dynasty team that dominates their sport for an extended length of time in the Hampton Roads area. Coach Toukene is on his way to being one of the best track coaches in the nation with his accomplishments, but is more proud of how he has seen academic progress in athletes. The coach holds tutoring sessions every Sunday to ensure his athletes are strong academically. Western Branch High School will compete in the 2016 New Balance Nationals Outdoor on June 17-19, 2016 in North Carolina. Watch the video interview of Coach Toukene and a few of his athletes.
