VHSL track athletes continue to raise the bar in the indoor season as they competed in the 5A/6A 2019 State Championships.
The VHSL State Meet had over 170 elite performances. It didn’t take long for a bit of history to be made at the VHSL 5A/6A Track & Feld State Meet held at Boo Williams Sportsplex In Hampton, Virginia on February 22-23. Bethel’s Jalani Davris, who capped the first day off (Friday) with a first-place throw of 42-09.50 in the girls shot put, topped the previous shot put record of 40-08.75. Westen Branch continued to pile up the state trophies as senior sprinter Shadajah Ballard captured three individual sprint titles. Not only did Shadajah win three sprint titles, she tied the record in the 55 meters sprint and broke her own record in the 55 meters hurdles with the time of 7.61. Nansemond River had a strong finish bringing home the girls title in the 5A girls division. In the next few weeks, the Virginia elite athletes will be preparing and tweaking for the New Balance Nationals Championship held at The Armory Track & Field Center New York, NY March 8-10, 2019. As they continue to make their place in VA athletic history.
