Grassfield H.S. Coach James Nixon, a veteran of the South-eastern district and VHSL coaching ranks, has elevated the Grizzly’s throwing corps to the top of the Southeastern district and the upper echelon of VHSL over the last decade. Since his arrival, Grassfield’s girls and boys have won seven individual VHSL Indoor and Outdoor Championships in throwing events during his span. At the conference, regionals and VHSL state level, Grassfield has been far and away the top throwing program since Nixon’s arrival. Coach Nixon has done much more than develop national champions, though. Grizzly throwers have consistently scored at the national meets, helping the program a handful of top-five finishes on the boys and girls.

In the 2018 VHSL Class 6 Region “A” Outdoor T & F Champion. The throwers from Grassfield placed first, second and third in girl’s shot put. First, second and fourth in the girls’ discus. The boys placed first, second and fourth in the discus. First second third and fourth in the shot put. Grassfield has tremendous talent and shown that they become one of Virginia high school’s top student-athletes and continue its strong team tradition.
