The Smithfield girls soccer team possessed teamwork and chemistry and it was put on full display on the regionals stage on Thursday night at Wanner Stadium in Williamsburg, Virginia. Sophia Erickson, Erin Lee and Madelyn Vincent converted penalty kicks and goalkeeper Makila Forbes made consecutive saves against host team, Jamestown, 3-2, in the Class 4A VHSL Regional Championship title game.
The first goal for Jamestown was by # 6 Madeline Allburn. Jamestown’s second score by #1 Kennedy Mills was an audacious penalty kick with 2 seconds left in the first half which made the game tied 2-2 going into halftime. Smithfield High School’s #15 Sophia Erickson scored the first point for Smithfield. Second score came on an exciting corner shot headbutt by #11 Erin Lee of Smithfield. The winning goal was scored by #12 Madelyn Vincent of Smithfield with nine minutes left in the game. Smithfield’s big win ended Jamestown’s 14 game winning streak. “Just to beat Jamestown was one of two of our goals which was four years in the making and it feels good”, said Erin Lee. It was very impressive and they did a good job. They played great defense and had several explosive players. The Smithfield Ladies played like a well-coached soccer team. Both teams will represent Hampton Roads in the 2018 VHSL Soccer Class 4A Girls State Championships Tournament.
