The high school golfing season has finally arrived. One of the most significant days for high school golf players, coaches, and fans, is upon us as teams across the Hampton Roads hit the links in August for the first day of fall practice. Teams have been patiently waiting since the season last ended for the new season to begin. They have come together to build a great bond of brother and sisterhood, pump themselves, attend practice every day, and work hard. With this dedication, they are preparing to lead their golf teams to new heights. Teams are building enthusiasm amongst themselves about the sport of golf, while coaches are assisting their players to create confidence in their abilities throughout the coming season. With the start of a season, comes new techniques, perspectives, and sometimes new styles of coaching. New coaches can introduce new ideas, new expectations, and new critiques. New players can introduce new energy, new techniques, and new limitations. While golf is an individual sport, it is played as a team in high school. The team structure can either thrive or collapse because it is based on each individual golfer’s abilities and willingness to do well. Although there is not much interaction between teammates, the way football and basketball players interact, it is still extremely important to build a team’s relationship and responsiveness to one another. The game is played with each player aiming to improve their team’s total scores, which requires motivation through the entire team. It seems like every year, Hampton Roads loses great players to graduation. Every time one of them leaves, a few more come in and take a great athlete’s place. That appears to be the case again this year, as well, as one All-State has recently moved on to the collegian ranks, one or two remain on the roster to keep the program thriving, with the potential of even more this coming season. Hampton Roads high school golf teams open the season in the second week in August in full swing.
