2017 Monitor Merrimac Conference 2 Tennis Tournaments:
20May, 2017
Western Branch, Woodside, Grassfield, Granby, and Oscar Smith High Schools competed against each other today in the Conference 2 Tournament at Western Branch High School. The tournament was exciting and exhilarating to watch teams face each other in championship with friends and teammates becoming opponents. The tournament was delayed and continued at Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk, VA due to scattered thunderstorms in the area. The change in venue was a suggestion from a courageous parent.
Granby High School girls tennis team played each other in the Monitor-Merrimac Conference Tournament. The Granby girls tennis team showed stamina and perseverance with the doubles match lasting over three hours. The athletes from each school displayed their skill and court awareness with the placements of every stroke.
Victoria Woods & Lindsay Grose (Granby HS) defeated Davina Long & Maria Cetrone (Granby HS) to win the doubles match title. Maria Cetrone of Granby also clinched the girls singles title by defeating Woodside freshman, Grace Vaughan who made history by being the first Woodside tennis athlete to make it to the regional tournament.
Ben Holtzclaw (Western Branch HS) defeated N. Warack-(Grassfield HS) to claim the Monitor-Merrimac Conference 2 boys singles tennis championship. In the boys doubles match, Warack/Kalenchenko (Grassfield HS) captured the boys doubles title.
