The Maury High School swimming and diving teams are making waves – and hoping they lead to a consistent winning culture during the 2020 championship series.
Local swim and dive teams began the post season Regional 5A Championships today on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Area swim team coaches said this event is what high school swimmers and divers wait for all year long across the state of Virginia. Maury High School’s diver, Owen Redfearn captured the respective championships at the Boys 1 Meter Region 5A Championships at Southside Aquatic Center in Norfolk, VA. Owen Redfearn came up just short of a state championship of his own last year with a second-place finish in the boys 1 meter springboard. He’s hungry to get back, but humble. Owen is penning an impressive second act as a sophomore. Owen has returned to springboard setting personal-bests this season. He’s entering his personal-best this season with 492.65 follow with a newfound confidence. But the one thing with Owen, he knows what works for him and he knows what he has to do during the 5A VHSL State Championships.
Savanna Miller of Deep Creek High School claimed the girls diving titles for Regional 5A with the score of 423.30. Savanna won by more than 20 points over her nearest competition. Rounding out the top five for the girls were Annabel Foster Princess Ann (403.55), Faith Pearson Princess Ann (385.85), Madison Hanrahan Deep Creek(334.70) and Maya Spektor Princess Ann (317.95).
