This documentary will capture some of the impressive performances of Bay Rivers Track &Field. The Bay Rivers District is an athletic district of the (VHSL) Virginia High School League which includes:

Bruton High

Grafton High

Jamestown High

Lafayette High

New Kent High

Poquoson High

Smithfield High

Tabb High

Warhill High

York High

When it comes to dominating the Bay Rivers track and field scene, the Warhill High girls’ team is setting a new standard of excellence. Their perseverance takes precedence in their lives. The athletes’ goals for the upcoming track season reflects upon the leadership and their determination throughout the Bay River regular season district meets. Each athlete’s pursuit of excellence, schools draws inspiration from unwavering passion for running and jumping. The thrill of reaching top speed is what propels athletes forward in competing in the Bay Rivers District. The purpose of this documentary is to learn about the Bay Rivers District’s program consisting of the coaches, athletes, fans, and the development beyond the last track event. The athletes’ story goes beyond mere victories on the field.

Conversation with Denbigh High School’s Track Coach, John Perrin.

I had a great conversation with Denbigh High School’s Track Coach, John Perrin about how he brings inspiration to his athletes to be their best self. He enjoys being a beacon for young people with tiny, unseen moments that does not show up in the stat sheets. Coach Perrin wants to send his athletes to be mentally, physically, and spiritually healthy . That is no easy feat in a sport as demanding as track and field. Coach Perrin injects faith, strength, and a desire to strive for excellence into every team that he is a part of here in the Hampton Roads area. During his time at Gloucester High School, he always showed up to every Conn-Madden Relays to help with the hurdlers, the finish line, and whatever else was necessary. He can’t seem to stay away. He understands that teenagers of today have to make tough decisions about what they want to do with their lives. Athletes need counsel outside of their family and Coach Perrin cherishes the relationships that he has built with the young people in the community and continues to be a role model and advisor to each of them to assist in their success as a student-athlete and adult. Coach Perrin stated, “They gotta want to be there.”

Newport News One City Marathon 2022

The 8th edition of the Newport News One City Marathon Weekend took place on March 6, 2022. The Newport News One City Marathon is a point-to-point marathon distance road race that spans the entire length of Newport News, Virginia. The course is full of picturesque views of the Virginia peninsula’s parks and historical neighborhoods. The event attracts over 600 runners and citywide spectators along the route this year making it a widely viewed sporting event in Newport News. The city organizers hope the 2022 race will bring the event back to its former standard, including the restoration of on-course entertainment at each of the five high schools.

What makes for an excellent coach? Is it the training or the inner qualities of a man or a combination of the two? Over 40 years as an educator and coach, Coach Raymond Pollard has trained many future teachers, coaches and other professionals. In my opinion, he is a master teacher and coach. Coach Pollard has mentored several coaches on a private basis and he views coaching as a calling, an art and a discipline. He models positive character traits for his family and students. As a runner, Raymond Pollard was one of the outstanding athletes in Hampton Roads. For example, he was named Penn Relays’ Most Outstanding Performers in 1964 while running for Huntington High School. It is no coincidence that I also rely on his wisdom. Over the years, his wisdom about coaching (and life) has inspired thousands of young people. I had the honor of sitting down with one of the greatest high school coaches in a video interview entitled “Characteristics Of An Excellent Coach: Coach Raymond Pollard”

Through hard work, dedication, determination, and perseverance, both in the classroom and on the track, anything can happen. With profound simplicity, Coach John Perrin redefines success and urges Gloucester Dukes Track Nation to pursue the best in themselves. Coach John Perrin talks about winning and his coaching future. In twenty-nine seasons at GHS, Coach Perrin has built a track programs that has been positive for the Gloucester County community. Coach Perrin stated in his own words, “I’m a humble man. “ I’ve tried to be a humble man my whole life,” he says. “When I look back at what we’ve accomplished with track and field, it’s astonishing. It’s an incredible blessing.”

The Lakeland High School track and field program ended its season and accomplished their goals in the 4A Track and Field Division. The Cavalier boys and girls received excellent performances up and down the roster in the last regular season 2020 track & field meet held at Boo Williams Sportsplex on Monday afternoon. Senior Teshun Pierre pushed himself to the limit and displayed more passion as he competed in each event. “It’s going to be a lot of hard work, but I feel like I’m ready for it”, stated Teshun. He exploded for a series of field event performances that repositioned the Cavaliers near the top of the VHSL Class 3 Region A Indoor. T&F Championship will take place on February 21, 2020 to February 22, 2020 at Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, VA.

Spotlighthigh sat down with Coach Claude Toukene. During his tenure at Western Branch High School Head Coach Toukene have won over 25 VHSL titles.

The VHSL State Meet had over 170 elite performances. It didn’t take long for a bit of history to be made at the VHSL 5A/6A Track & Feld State Meet held at Boo Williams Sportsplex In Hampton, Virginia on February 22-23. Bethel’s Jalani Davris, who capped the first day off (Friday) with a first-place throw of 42-09.50 in the girls shot put, topped the previous shot put record of 40-08.75. Westen Branch continued to pile up the state trophies as senior sprinter Shadajah Ballard captured three individual sprint titles. Not only did Shadajah win three sprint titles, she tied the record in the 55 meters sprint and broke her own record in the 55 meters hurdles with the time of 7.61. Nansemond River had a strong finish bringing home the girls title in the 5A girls division. In the next few weeks, the Virginia elite athletes will be preparing and tweaking for the New Balance Nationals Championship held at The Armory Track & Field Center New York, NY March 8-10, 2019. As they continue to make their place in VA athletic history.

Coach Johnson of Spotlighthigh sat down with Western Branch’s Head Coach Claude Toukene. After bringing the Bruins their 25^th title in 14 years, Coach Toukene talked about the emotions of being more than just a coach to his student-athletes. Coach Claude Toukene announced he will leave after the 2018 school year in order to become the head coach at Bryant & Stratton in Virginia Beach. The Boys and Girls Bruins gave coach Claude Toukene two more VHSL State Championships at Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, Virginia on March 24^th at the 2018 VHSL Class 6 State Indoor T & F Championships.
