07Feb, 2016
The 2016 Conference 1 & 9 Gymnastics Tournament was held at Bayside H.S. Saturday February 6, 2016. The Tournament features the Coastal Conference 1 (Bayside, Cox, Colonial, Kellam, Landstown, Ocean Lakes, and Tallwood) and the Atlantic Conference 9 (Great Bridge, Indian River, Kempsville, Princess Anne, and Salem). The gymnasts displayed sweat, tears, and hard work. With two Conferences (5A & 6A) going on at once and twelve schools competing, this conference tournament was definitely worth watching. Diamond Rice, the only competitor from Tallwood High School, did a fabulous job on the vault. Being the only one from her school, Kellam High School’s girls cheered her on from the sidelines with great sportsmanship. Lizzy Lyons from Ocean Lakes came in second place on the vault with 9s across the score board helping her team tremendously. Dalton Long from Kellam High placed first in the uneven parallel bars with a 9.575. She placed multiple other times as well. A huge congratulations to Salem High’s very own Madison Lieurance for placing first All-Around helping her team by Scoring 139.0 total points for the team. The audience was mesmerized by Emily Ware’s floor performance as she elegantly moved across the floor with plenty of amazing technique and earned a score of 9.650. Emily placed first in each of her competitions except in the uneven parallel bars where she placed second with the score of 9.525. Emily Ware was the Coastal Conference 1 All Around Champion with the total points of 38.4500. Congratulations to Salem High for winning the team Atlantic Conference 9 Tournament and congratulations to Kellam High for winning the Coastal Conference 1 team Tournament. Story: by Marli Peters.
