Local swim and dive teams began the post season Regional 5A Championships today on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Area swim team coaches said this event is what high school swimmers and divers wait for all year long across the state of Virginia. Maury High School’s diver, Owen Redfearn captured the respective championships at the Boys 1 Meter Region 5A Championships at Southside Aquatic Center in Norfolk, VA. Owen Redfearn came up just short of a state championship of his own last year with a second-place finish in the boys 1 meter springboard. He’s hungry to get back, but humble. Owen is penning an impressive second act as a sophomore. Owen has returned to springboard setting personal-bests this season. He’s entering his personal-best this season with 492.65 follow with a newfound confidence. But the one thing with Owen, he knows what works for him and he knows what he has to do during the 5A VHSL State Championships.

Savanna Miller of Deep Creek High School claimed the girls diving titles for Regional 5A with the score of 423.30. Savanna won by more than 20 points over her nearest competition. Rounding out the top five for the girls were Annabel Foster Princess Ann (403.55), Faith Pearson Princess Ann (385.85), Madison Hanrahan Deep Creek(334.70) and Maya Spektor Princess Ann (317.95).

The girls and boys dive is comprised of athletes that qualified for the state dive championships that will be held in February.

On the girls’ side, Samantha Miller form Deep Creek High took the title with 408 points. Sydney Soto of Ocean Lakes High was the runner-up with 376.55 The height, the twist, and the smooth entry in the pool was phenomenal. Owen Readfearn of Maury High School took the lead early on and held off the field through the back half as he scored 468.45. Indigo Flynch from Landstown High School occupied the second place spot with 398.85. They both have been successful and they have good divers again this season. Readfearn and Flynch seems to have matured as divers this past season while competing and serving as a role model to the younger divers. K2 (K-Squared) Dive Club Team is the only dive club in the Hampton Roads area.

From the first moment she stepped foot on the springboard, Olivia was on a mission. The final result may be just like the last few years, but Olivia got there in a very competitive way. The 20019 VHSL 5-A Diving championship ended with the Princess Anne’s senior Olivia Francella successful in her bid to three-peat. Olivia captured her third overall VHSL State Dive title at the 2019 Swimming and Diving Championship with 411.55 total points for one of the largest margin of victory in a state diving title. To go out and be state champion and have a three-peat is definitely a special feeling,” said senior Olivia Francella. A pair of underclassmen showed a glimpse of their competitiveness for the next two years to come in the boys diving competition. Lee H.S. sophomore Ari Snow won the boys 1-meter diving competition with a 353.40, while Maury’s freeman Owen Redfearn was runners-up with 347.70 points.

Keith Kopecky brings a wealth of diving experience and history to Virginia Beach High School as he along with the K2 (K Squared) Dive Program lead one of the Hampton Roads area most prestigious diving programs. He is the Head Diving Coach of the K2 Diving Team. Keith Kopecky is also one of the head dive coaches of the Virginia Beach Public Schools that serve several of the diving teams. K2 Diving Team is the premiere springboard and platform diving team in Hampton Roads. Kopecky’s challenge was to build winning programs from the ground level up through several seasons at Virginia Beach High Schools and K2 Dive Club. He quickly helped launch the program to an elite status after several divers established themselves as top national talents, including Olivia Francella, senior at Princess Anne High School, a high school diving All-American, and will diver for the University of Pennsylvania this Fall. Olivia Francella will be tempting her third consecutive VHSL state title in February. Owen Redfearn, a freshman at Maury High School will be one of the top contenders on the boys side for VHSL State Championships. Owen has been one of the AAU top finalists for 1meter and 3meters springboard. Coach expressed he‘s happy that the club continues to take the steps forward in everything that they are doing with their young athletes by accepting the perseverance C.A.R.D: Commitment, Attitude, Respect, and Discipline. “We’re really excited for our athletes.” Keith Kopecky, the Director and Head Coach of K2 Diving brings with him years of coaching experience with a great coaching and competitive diving resume and still to this day maintains the philosophy of his former coach, Coach Ron O’Brien (Greg Louganis coach as well). The mission of K2 Diving is to promote healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility through the competitive diving program. Please visit the team website at the link below for more team achievements and how to join.

The top diver from the combined districts in each region will move on to their respective class regional championships beginning on the fifth of February.

Senior Olivia Francella has a bright future ahead of her. She’s one of the top students in her class at Princess Anne High School and she has the University of Pennsylvania waiting for her when she graduates. But, before Olivia moves on to the University of Pennsylvania, she has some unfinished business left in her accomplished high school diving career at the championship series. Olivia has one more shot to grab her ultimate goal – a three time state championship.

Owen Redfearn of Maury High school completed his freshman season with strong performances and has emerged as one of the best divers in the state of Virginia. After an impressive dive meet win on Friday night against Bayside, First Colonial, Kellam, Cox, Green Run, Kempsville, Landstown, Ocean Lakes, Salem (Virginia Beach), and Tallwood, freshman Owen put forth a solid performance en route to a great ace performance during the championship series. Though, he has only been diving for three years, Owen has become one of the top competitors in the state. Indigo Flynch of Landstown H.S. is expected to make a podium bid on the 1 meter springboard as well. These student-athletes have worked incredibly hard and are achieving their goals.
