The Woodside High School boys basketball team made history Saturday afternoon. The wolverines beat Patrick Henry 54-52 in the Class 5A State Championship game at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond, Virginia. Woodside Coach Stefan Welsh, as a player, led his team to back-to-back state titles in 2004 and 2005, and now 2023 Coach Welsh did the impossible by leading Woodside High to a VHSL basketball state championship title as a coach. Trevor Smith led the wolverines with 17 points, while Mykel Jenkins added 14, and Christian Greenlaw with the game winning shot. Over the past 27 years, Woodside High School has firmly established itself as one of the premiere basketball programs in the Hampton Roads area. The Woodside Wolverines boys basketball team completed the final part of its mission by accomplishing its goal of becoming a state champion in 2023.

school ball, where there is one game a night during the season barring a tournament. The AAU coaches’ goal is to teach each child how to play fundamental basketball at their level, learn teamwork and sportsmanship, build character, be teachable, have a great time with kids their age, along with giving them experiences that last a lifetime.

Playing a sport is important in every child’s development. Parents should motivate their kids as much as possible to take part in sports activities. Kids are more likely to take up a sport they like with the help of a professional league network that supports sports in communities. they can enjoy a happier and healthier childhood. AAU summer programs places a major emphasis on individual development & fundamental team sports. Throughout each season, players will enhance their basketball IQ and skill sets through the teaching and mentoring of our experienced coaching staff. There’s no denying that the AAU still serves its purpose to provide aspiring high school hoopers a spotlight to secure collegiate scholarships, but the landscape of high school basketball is drastically changing and the tug of war between AAU and traditional programs is becoming incredibly one-sided. Only time will tell whether traditional high school hoops programs will ever regain their appeal or whether AAU reigns supreme for years to come.

Welsh graduated Woodside High School fifteen years ago and moved onto play basketball as an Arkansas Razorback. Passionate about the boys’ basketball team making a national presence again, Welsh is eager to begin. As a whole, the Wolverines’ continual objective is to be the best competitive match against their opponents every night they take on the court while aiming to improve with consistency. Their ultimate goal is to be the champions of the district tournament at the end of the season, so up to that point they plan on working hard and dedicating themselves to their sport. “So it’s going to take some time, but we’re definitely working toward the goal and objective which is to be successful. I was born for this, this coaching thing,” Welsh said. His confidence and dedication is just another reminder of his effectiveness. Welsh was a hard-working member of Woodside’s basketball team when it won back-to-back state championships in 2004 and 2005. Thanks to wonderful, passionate individuals like it, it is a successful program: it has been for years and will continue to be. There may be some pressure to get it done: test are coming. The competition in Hampton Roads again to be stiff this 2018-2019 season. By Amanda Howard
