Hampton Roads consistently turns out player after player, year after year, from high schools to colleges. The high schools have talent. Sports in Virginia is year-round. Spring weight room bleeds into summer workouts, which bleeds into two-a-day, then into the actual season, and finally into offseason workouts. These players play against each other often times from little league right into high school teams. For many students, sports play a large part in the high school experience. Sports are still a very popular activity for students around the country. High school sports teams bring together students who may not have otherwise crossed paths. Working together to achieve a common goal helps strengthen bonds and build camaraderie for a life time of friendship.

One of the bigger concern that parents have is which inadvertently contributes to their child’s performance on the playing field. Parents are thier child’s biggest fan. They are supportive in many ways. Many parents keep their child sport’s in perspective and do remember that the sport belongs to the child, not them because It’s supposed to be fun. When you allow your child/athlete to have ownership of the sport, you keep it in perspective, when you insure that your child continues to have fun, he/she will remain healthy and happy mentally to have the best chance to perform to her/his potential. Mr. Mooney is a role model in the stands as he cheers for the Warhill football team weekly.

Warhill H.S. football team continues on their quest for a great season by defeating Jametown H.S. 54-7. “This is where we want our program to be,” Warhill head football coach Rhodes said. “We’re getting there although we are still not all the way there”. “We’ve been playing well this season but the rest of our season gets a lot tougher. “It is fun having success and to have the players who have been in the program for four years have this success.” Warhill had five different players score touchdowns in tonight’s game. The run touchdowns were scored by #8 Jack Schultz and #25 Micheal Akpan with two run touchdowns. A.J. Price passed for two touchdowns caught by #11 Dylan Cottrel, and #7 Te’Shawn Knightnor. Markcus Rhodes had a kickoff return touchdown for 95 yards, the longest kickoff return in the Bay River District history. Chase Barnett sealed the game with two interceptions as the defense held Jamestown to 7 points.

Warhill notched its fourth consecutive victory and for the first time in school history, they are ranked number one in the power points (21.0) in the Bay Rivers District. Warhill also continued its dominant run of play, blowing out Smithfield 42-6 to go to 4-0. The Lions are outscoring opponents by an average of 20 points per game thus far. There have been some big rushing performances by Warhill players this season, though none could top Lion’s senior Michael Akpan’s effort Thursday against Smithfield. Akpan is one of the most dynamic tailbacks in Bay River District with an innate ability to bounce outside, find a hole, and dash for field-switch runs. Tonight’s success can be attributed to Akpen, who rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns against the Smithfield Packers. Quarterback A.J. Price threw four two touchdowns, both to Dylwan Cottrel. Price had 200 passing yards for tonight. The Warhill Lions’ next matchup will be against Jamestown High on Friday, October 4th at Wanner Stadium.

The 12th Man Tradition at Warhill is known as the “Lions’ Den.” The Twelfth Man refers to the cheering section of the student body. This group of students who electrify the stadium with their rumbling and chants help influence the game like the 12th player on the field. They have a potentially helpful role in the game. At Warhill, they have the “Lions’ Den” who displays unity, solidarity, teamwork, spirit, and strong support for their football team. The Lion’s Den is a cherished tradition in which the student body encourages their team and creates a fun, positive, and enthusiastic atmosphere at the high school games. The Lions’ Den has been making a difference and they are regarded as perhaps the best fans in town.

And yes, Warhill football is on a two game winning streak defeating Tabb High School. Lion’s Michael Akpan(#25) rushing over 100 yards game and the go-ahead touchdown as Warhill ‘s defeat Tabb Tigers 20-13 at Wanner Stadium on Friday, September 13, 2019. Logan Mooney caught the screen pass thrown by quarterback AJ Price, and with some fight, shuffled his way through traffic, stretching for the touchdown. Logan also was named defensive player of the game with two interceptions. Devonte Saferight rushed for one touchdowns to account for the Lion’s scoring. Warhill improved to 2-0.
