Jamestown has a lot to be proud of this season. The Jamestown girls and boys tennis teams made Jamestown Eagles Nation proud today. Over the last two days they have beaten three of the top teams in the 4A region. Both teams overcame many challenges to peak at the right time. Lower and upper classmen lead the team to make it a total team effort in one of the most dramatic victories at the Region 4A Tennis Tournament at the Huntington Tennis Center in Newport News, VA. After rain delays and several venue changes on Friday and Saturday, the Jamestown Eagles faced a great athletic team, Grafton High. It was a nail biter through the boys doubles round and Grafton High had the lead throughout the match as Jamestown tied for a tiebreaker match play. Once the boys doubles play started, Jamestown High (Squire/Sheriff) began pulling away from a very tough Grafton team to go on and win 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

Jamestown High freshman, Julia Clark, won her first VHSL tournament singles and qualified for the VHSL state tournament which will take place on Monday, June 7 at Jamestown High School tennis courts. The stand-out athlete put in the work all season to get to the tournament before shining like a gold medal athlete in the girls’ singles title match. It didn’t take long for Julia to showcase her clear talent, eventually winning in straight sets against a great sophomore player, L. Lewis of Warhill High. Julia won the first set by a score of 6-3 and followed with a 6-3 win in the second set, earning the gold medal and the title of Class 4A Tennis Girls Singles Regionals Champion.

Tennis Pro Dave Howell’s passion for teaching shines on. Virginia tennis professional Dave Howell launched UTR in 2008 as a private company to promote the rating system he developed and tested successfully in Hampton Roads Area of Virginia. Coaches are always looking for ways to get an advantage over their rival conference opponents. As technology becomes a bigger part of strategy, coaches that use it effectively and are early adopters tend to exhibit a high recruiting class for a successful team. The “Universal Tennis Rating” system is now being recognized by many college coaches as the best metric available for recruiting talent. Coaches benefits the use of the UTR system for recruiting the best fit player for their college program.

When Jamestown tennis coach (Bob Artis) found out his player would be playing against fellow teammates Lehman Montgomery and Albon Yowell in the finals of the 4A Regional Boys Single Championships, the thought going through his head was simple. ” Here we go Eagles.” The two athletes play together every day at practice, so naturally they have a bit of a competitive history. Jamestown have a rich tradition of strong tennis teams, and good tennis families in years pasted.

Albon Yowell method was successful, as Albon had clinched the single championship Thursday with an insurmountable lead entering game with score 6-2, 6-2. Albon Yowell has over 132 career tennis wins, a great milestone for himself and the Jamestown tennis program. In the girls’ singles tournament, Anna Murphy of Grafton H.S. defeated Stefonia Ilardi of Warhill H.S. 6-0, 6-0.

Jamestown lady’s Eagles (Sharp/Rowland) bring home first-place in the girls doubles honors. The Eagles’ doubles win came against a fairly local team, matching up against Warhill H.S. They defeated Ilardi and Cawthon in (6-0, 4-6, 7-5) fashion to earn their bid to the 4A VHSL State Tournament Championship.

Yowell teamed up with Deberry to go 6-1, 6-2 in doubles with victories over ranked opponents, Choi/Petit of Grafton H.S.

“It was just great to watch them play together,” Coach Artis said. “Just knowing them as individuals, it was fun to see them become the excellent doubles team that they were. The fact that they are leaders on the court makes it a little bit more fun.”

Spotlight High spoke with Jamestown student-athletes on their big win in the tournament play and talk about their successful 2018 tennis season.

Two well-coached girls tennis teams, Smithfield (13-3) and Jamestown (16-1), matched up at the 4A Regional Championship Titles at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center at the College of William & Mary Thursday May 17. Jamestown High School’s Eagles girls tennis team scored a 5-1 win over Smithfield Ladies Packers on Thursday to advance to Class 4A state tennis tournament. Smithfield played well as a program and improved throughout the regular season. This season, by far was the best season throughout the school’s history. The Lady Packers came to play and every match came down to the wire. Junior, Storm Ogle of Smithfield stated about her teammates, “I was very proud of them and it was great for the school to be runners-up regional champions and compete in the state tennis tournament.” Jamestown rallied to win, with Jamestown 4A Regionals title hopes resting solely on A. Quarles shoulders. She seized the moment like a true champion on Thursday, registering a big victory of her young career with a two-set (6-0; 6-3) win at No. 6 singles to give the Jamestown Lady ‘s tennis team a 5-1 triumph over Smithfield. Congratulations to all of the student-athletes and coaches on an outstanding showing.
