The Menchville Lady Monarchs got 8 goals from five different players, found the back of the net, and a firm grasp on first place in the Peninsula District with a 7-0-1 mark. Goals were made by Sydney Robertson, Megan Wilson, Caltlyn Hollis, Madlsyn Strange, Jaelyn Windham, and two assists by Sydney Robertson. They appear to be a real contender for the Class 4A Division, with the play-offs starting in approximately two weeks. Coach Johnson spoke with Coach Dennis Zollicoffer about his team chemistry and their big win.

In the boys game, Kecoughtan and Menchville tied in 2OT. Two top boys teams on the peninsula faced off on a Tuesday evening. Both teams played each other very tight. They battled to the end of regulation and through double overtime, but neither were able to score again. The match was a physical one that yielded more fouls than shots and featured over five yellow cards. Both teams displayed great sportsmanship at the end of the game as each player shook hands and congratulated each other on a hard played game.

Freshman Midfielder, Sydney Robertson scored twice as Menchville won 3-1 in the Peninsula District match away vs Warwick High, taking the rival match. “Our girls knew they were going to play for the entire 80 minutes; they were able to find that goal late; and our athletics out played them today,” said Coach Dennis Zollicoffer. Warwick and Menchville have always been rivals. Menchville seemed really prepared and came out and played well this game. This was a good back-and-forth game with both teams with great defensive plays. We knew this young group of athletes were going to be improved this year. Every year both teams played hard-nosed team strategy and they never back down. The Mighty Menchville Monarchs knew what to do. they had defensive strengths and dominated the game. The Monarchs took the early advantage, taking a 1-0 lead point shot by # 18 Sydney Robertson and assisted by teammate # 2 Jaelyn Windham. The # 2 Jaelyn also scored a goal and the assisted by # 17 Ainsley Abbitt in the second half. The Monarchs, looking to spread out the ladys’ Raiders and trying to find passing lanes, dominated time of possession late in the final 5 minutes of gameplay. The team is currently 10-1-1 overall and in the top 3 in the regionals 5A play.

Smithfield Packer’s, ranked third in the Bay Rivers District, kicking off with district play this week in the regular season. If there were any lingering concerns about Smithfield’s lack of experience this girls’ soccer season, the Packer more than addressed them on Friday night. Utilizing a bend-not-break defense, including spectacular play from sophomore goalkeeper Abbie Epperson. Abbie step in big when starter goalkeeper Manila Forbes went down on an injury in the first quarter after a big play coming up with the save. Smithfield (4-2-1) netted three goals late in the second from Rebekah Christian, Sophia Christian and Maddie Vincent. The lady Packer have been consistent throughout the soccer season, and a well-rounded team that doesn’t have that one player that really stands out, but as a team they play well collectively.
