Grafton High Clippers (Region A Runner-up) knocked off Warhill High Lions (Region A Champion), 3-1, in front of an electric crowd in the Warhill gymnasium on Tuesday night November 19, 2019. The Grafton (23 – 2) were strong down the stretch, hitting .450 in the final frame of the four-set thriller to earn the trip to the VHSL State Championship game. It marks the third time the Grafton have been to the State finals. Olivia Smalls, Mariela Alvarado and Jada Ross turned in another strong performance, directing the offense to a great hitting percentage and collecting plenty of assists in each game. Jada was instrumental in keeping the Warhill Lions out of system, collecting aces from the service line. Grafton is now in control of its own destiny in pursuit of the 2019 VHSL 4A title. Grafton will play host to Loudoun County for the state championship Friday November 22 at the VCU Siegel Center at 4:00pm.

Tuesday night the Grafton High Clippers’ girls’ volleyball team achieved their first goal in rivalry play, with an impressive victory over the Warhill Lions. The Clippers’ won the first sets, 25-21 losing the second set 26-24, and winning the next two sets 25-18, 25-18 and playing behind for most of the night. On each occasion when Grafton rally a tie or took the lead, Warhill made it a tough battle, abruptly dashing the Clippers’ hopes of keeping it close and perhaps the most dominant. The Clippers have not lost a game this season, and appear to be playing better as the season progresses. With a record of 7-0, the Clippers will match-up against Smithfield at home on September 26, at 7:30pm.

Coming into the 2018 VHSL State tournament, expectations were high for the team. Not only did this season’s team meet those expectations, they far exceeded them. The Cavaliers rolled through the season with a perfect record and captured the VHSL Class 5 State Championship at the William and Mary Kaplan Arena on November 16th. The third set was much like the first two as the Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead and were able to hold on to that lead for the 25-16 win in set three to complete the three set win. Princess Anne was led by Jayna Francis with 20 kills, Elizabeth Hunt with 10 kills and Erin Gray with 23 digs, Alyssa Vitale With 42 assists. In the state tournament Princess Anne has won without dropping a single match. They want to be a part of the big matches and ultimately their goal was to work as hard as possible and get a chance to win that VHSL State Championship and they did.

Loudoun County’s volleyball dynasty has enjoyed constant competition and a winning streak at state level. Loudoun County has been on a run of success that’s unparalleled in the Raiders volleyball history. They’ve made 13 trips to the state tournament and won 11 trophies, finishing runners-up twice in school history. Player Josephine Williams said they’ve worked hard to instill a family atmosphere with no divisions. The seniors know they have to serve others and not just be in it for themselves. #12 Captain Megan Bukala, stated, “It’s a fight to get to the state tournament every year and its never easy”. It’s the unselfishness and the caring for each other,” Megan said. Coach John Senchak stated about his team, “They just perform; they simply perform.” This first year coaching with the Raiders pointed out that his athletes met every expectations this season. As the teams traded points at the outset of the fourth and final game, the Raiders steadily adjusted to the Grafton Clippers’ changes. The Raiders slid into a celebratory circle on the court as champions again.

The Indian River High School Braves come into this match with boasting a 11-0 record mark in Southeastern District, and have won 11 of their last matches … Great Bridge has already posted its most wins in a season when it recorded 3-0 victory against The Indian River High School boosting their record to (12-1). Powerful kills by Ace Backer allowed for the Wildcats to pull away and win the first game 25-16. After a second game win as will (25-19), a 25-23 victory in the third set would be all the momentum needed for Wildcats to put away the Braves. The Great Bridge Wildcats (12-1) will host Nansemond River Tuesday, Oct 9,. Indian River High School Braves (11-1) will host The Deep Creek on Tuesday. Playing against rival Indian River seems to bring out the best in Great Bridge.
