Kristen Boykin coached Warhill High in several tournaments and could only walk away with runners-up finishes. On Thursday night at the Wanner stadium in Williamsburg Virginia, Coach Boykin celebrated a field hockey 4B regional championship with the Lady Lions and it was satisfying to finally be called a regionals champion. Coach Boykin mentioned the win was about the senior class. The Lions kept their surge going in the fourth quarter, as they found themselves in a great spot during the last corner try of the game. Everybody had a part on the Warhill High team and everybody played their part. Coach Boykin spoke with Coach Johnson after the big win. Warhill 2 Mechanicsville 1. Goals: #8 Lillian Snyder #22 Chismer Branscome. The Lions host Great Bridge in a state semifinal Tuesday April 19.

Defense development is essential to having a good field hockey team. Even though offensive players are often the ones who get their names on the stat sheet, every field hockey team needs a dominating defensive presence in order to succeed in the Bay River District. It was a battle of two opposing forces. Lafayette entered the match with one game win in their first encounter earlier in the season. #23 Ava Harriss and #16 Elizabeth Schmidt had other plans for Tuesday night in their second field hockey thriller. Harriss hit the back of the cage with just 13:42 in 4th quarter for the first goal of the game and Schmidt scored the second goal with 10:05 minutes left in the game landing the Lion a 2-0 shutout over Lafayette HS. With the win, Lion’s improves to 5-2 on the season, while LHS falls to 5-3. Their next test will be at 6:00 pm on Thursday, March 25, 2021 against New Kent @ New Kent High School’s Ed Allen Jr Athletic Complex.

The Path To Sate Starts This Week. Only the top four teams remain in each class A heading into the semi-final game round. Making state tourney appearances is now an expectation because field hockey players work hard and want to maintain the program’s success. Teams are just so excited to still be playing in November. They are going to come out and play as hard as they can and lay it all on the line for the state tournament game. The team seedings and final four tournament bracket have been set for the 2019 VHSL Field Hockey Championship which is November 15-16 at South County High School.

Arguably, one of the toughest and coolest sports to play is Field Hockey in Gloucester. Coach Miller always has his athletes in shape, aggressive, and determined to endure constant sprinting up and down the field to advance the ball into the goal. The team’s continued success can be attributed to the hard work and commitment demonstrated by each other and the coaching staff alike on a daily basis. With the regular season just over, the Gloucester High School field hockey team is intent on making its mark in the all-important playoff /postseason. The Gloucester Dukes displayed a lot of energy during senior night. The Dukes came out on fire and played with a lot of intensity. The seniors really set the tone and they implemented a lot of communication that they had been working on with spacing and ball movement in the first half looking rock solid. The Lady Dukes shut out Hanover High School 6-0 win today with a 6-0 win. Offensively, Hannah Hamay lead the Dukes and is one of the team’s top scorers and assists throughout the season. The Dukes finished the regular season 16-0. Coach Johnson spoke with Hannah about the game and senior night.

With field hockey season in full swing, Gloucester begin to face more opponents in non-conference battle toward the second half of the season. The Gloucester Dukes field hockey team had a home non-conference game vs. Granby at The US Field Hockey Regional Training Center that is known for one of America’s most well-known field hockey complexes on the east coast. Friday night as the Gloucester Dukes extended their regular season win streak with a 6-0 win over Granby. The Dukes led 3-0 during the first half and 3-0 at the second half. Gloucester remained consistent, scoring in each of the quarters to pull away for the 6-0 win. I’m really proud of our senior’s leadership,” Gloucester coach Mike Miller said. “I thought it was a great effort by everybody out there and a gutsy performance.”

Field hockey season will be here before you know it and spotlighthigh.com will once again bring you highlights of several games this season. Gloucester High School held their first field hockey jamboree. The Dukes will open the season as one of Virginia top teams in the area. An explosive offense and sturdy defense made the Dukes the favorite to repeat in Class 5A. The Gloucester Dukes have some holes to fill in certain areas following the departure of some All-Americans in field hockey. The Gloucester Dukes has become a program that reloads annually and should be in the mix for a consecutive conference title and can be one of the contenders for a second state title which would be a first for a Gloucester Dukes field hockey team. The jamboree featured high school teams from private schools and public schools competing as part of a promotion of field hockey in Hampton Roads. It was great to see the high level of athleticism and passion for the sport at the jamboree today. The jamboree featured several teams in this area. My favorite part of the jamboree was watching all the athletes playing with their hearts and soul with excitement for the sport. Gloucester Dukes field hockey achieved their goal in promoting high school field hockey in Hampton Roads.

Gloucester Field hockey players Cassidy Goodwin, Madison Huston, and Briana Greene are a demanding bunch due to the undying love they have for their sport. They share a goal and a passion for the game and a desire for a successful season. The girls work hard with their coaches and they were able to have an unforgettable experience this year by obtaining a state title for Gloucester High School. Coach Mike Miller’s varsity team finished 23-0 with its state final victory (11/14/2015) while the junior varsity have several young prospects in line who are diligently working hard and applying themselves, so they too can achieve success in the near future. Enjoy the following interview in which the team reminisces about this past season.
